Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)


The person will be an energetic and passionate self-starter who puts diplomatic excellence front and centre of all they do.

They will have creativity in order to marry historical elegance with the projection of a modern UK, using the house as a vibrant, busy stage with a reputation for first class diplomatic entertainment in order to influence and convene.

In addition to leadership of a happy, motivated team and oversight of a household running well, this position seeks someone with vision able to carry off big, set-piece annual events such as the Kings Birthday party, as well as be able to adapt to initmate dinners and innovative conferences.

All reflecting the Ambassador's personality and "best of British" style.

The Residence Manager will coordinate all activities and staff in the house, and operate within the British government guidance and budgets.

The position is offered either as live in or live out, with remuneration and compensation calculated accordingly.


Roles and responsibilities:


  • Reporting directly to the Ambassador, they will create and deliver a wide range of events with flair and impact through this team (and additional contracted staff as needed), and work closely and collegiately with the Ambassador's PA and other key members of the Embassy.
  • The role is also responsible for coordinating the Residence diary, balancing core diplomatic business with special events throughout the year. These range from lunches, dinners and media briefings to conferences and official visits sometimes simultaneously or at short notice. This will also require strong budgetary skills, working with the Embassy's Corporate Services team to ensure all procurement, billing and financial management of the official Residence, its stocks and entertainment budgets are within audit guidelines.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Excellent English verbal and written (minimum C1 level for CEFR framework *) language skills will be assessed.
  • Experience in dealing with large hospitality events and managing a diverse team of staff.
  • Delivering with confidence, creativity and through others with impact to showcase the best of Britain and to support our "diplomatic excellence" and "respect" agendas.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer focus and a strong focus on delivering results;
  • Ability to work flexibly, depending on the needs of the Ambassador and Embassy team;
  • Availability to work flexible hours if required;
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Some basic knowledge of German would be helpful;
  • Previous experience of managing a team in an events management role, with a focus on the ability to motivate and lead;
  • Experience of stewarding and serving at dinners and events;
  • Event management, including effective budget forecasting and monitoring;
  • Experience of working and managing budgets and managing contractors, ensuring they deliver on time and on budget to the required specification.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a full-time, 35 hours per week permanent contract. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked.

The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata increasing to 30 days annually after 5 years of service.

The Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year, and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance.
