Organizational Setting


The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology (NEFW) comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, the Waste Technology Section, the Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section and the Research Reactor Section.

The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.


The Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Section (D&ERS) assists Member States with building their capacity to decommission any nuclear related facilities and environmental remediation of any sites contaminated with radioactive material, including NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material).

It cooperates with other sections and especially with the two teams in WTS in charge of radioactive waste management (pre-disposal and disposal).

Efforts are focused mainly on the elaboration and implementation of comprehensive and integrated decommissioning and environmental remediation policies and strategies, the development of supporting infrastructure, the promotion of good practices for sustainable, safe and cost-effective project planning, implementation and completion; enabling access to current scientific and technological developments, along with the provision of direct assistance through the technical cooperation programme.

Main Purpose


As the lead technical expert in a team reporting to the Section Head, the Technical Lead manages, co-ordinates, and supervises the NEFW's projects on environmental remediation including NORM related activities.

Role


The Technical Lead of Environmental Remediation is (1) an expert project manager with extensive experience in managing complicated ER projects with situational sensitivity; (2) a Scientific Secretary with demonstrated analytical thinking to formulate ER activities and products in addressing the needs and challenges of Member States; (3) a manager with leadership to guide and manage the work programme of the ER Team; and (4) a coordinator to support the D&ERS in liaising with other IAEA Divisions and organizations in inter-agency collaborative projects with the UN system and other international organizations, reviewing and providing a systematic overview and preparation of technical documentation and papers for discussions.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Broadens and deepens the technical knowledge by organizing technical meetings related to the specialized field and serves as scientific secretary; prepares technical programmes; contributes to the preparation and editing of technical reports, proceedings, etools development and other scientific publications; prepares and organizes inhouse meetings in support of the Section's scientific programme.
  • Contributes to integrated delivery of activities through coordination of interagency collaborative projects within the UN system; promotes the exchange of information on operational and safetyrelated experience gained worldwide.
  • Ensures the IAEA's continued high standing and recognition in the scientific community by representing the IAEA at national and international meetings as required; establish and maintain contacts with individual scientists at various national centres, relevant international organizations, committees and scientific societies.
  • Plans, leads, coordinates, monitors implementation, and supervises the NEFW ER Team and environmental remediationrelated activities following Member States' needs, including NORM residues related challenges.
