Organizational Setting


The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.

The Office of Safety and Security Coordination (NSOC) is located in the Office of the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department.

Its mission is to ensure the technical consistency and effective coordination of the IAEA's activities in the nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety and nuclear security programmes.


NSOC comprises three Sections:

the Programme and Strategy Coordination Section, the Networks Management and Partnership Section and the Safety Standards and Security Guidance Development Section.

The mission of the Programme and Strategy Coordination Section (PSCS) is to ensure the effective development and coordinated implementation of Major Programme 3 and to provide for a common strategic approach to cross cutting areas such as capacity building.

Main Purpose


Under the supervision of the Section Head the Information Systems Assistant acts as a focal point in IT- related matters in the Department to ensure provision, maintenance and update of IT-related components, coordination of upcoming IT-related requirements, and facilitating staff referrals to MTIT services as needed.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Act as a focal point for ITrelated matters in coordination with other IT support colleagues within the department.
  • Oversee and ensure that end users have the appropriate IThardware/software, printers and other peripherals, accounts and access rights including IAEA standard desktop security settings and software configurations. Ensure or refer to MTIT Help Desk the maintenance and correct functioning of PCs, laptops, local/LAN printers and other IT related equipment. Maintain an inventory of all ITrelated equipment centrally assigned in NS. Provide local administrator support; manage security, active directory groups and entities, functionality, and architecture of network folders, as requested.
  • Assess future needs, research and evaluate as appropriate applicable new technology and methods. Create and implement a biennial regular budget plan for ITrelated procurement purposes based on projected divisional requirements and new or upcoming initiatives by MTIT. Procure equipment within budgetary constraints as requested.
  • Represent NS Department at various Agencywide IT related meetings/working groups, including IAEA computer hardware standards, new operating systems/software evaluations, and webissues. Advise management on all such matters especially about any new proposals or initiatives with potential impact on the divisional IT setup.
