The British Embassy in Vienna is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an
FDI Business Development and Project Adviser to join its Department for Business and Trade (DBT) team.


Main purpose of the role is to promote the UK as the destination of choice for investment, thereby maximising FDI from Austria to the United Kingdom.

This is to be achieved through active market screening, collaboration and consultation with Austrian companies, sourcing and developing leads from new and potential investors as well as engaging with existing Austrian investors in the UK.


The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build interest in British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK.

DBT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed.

The FDI Business Development and Project Adviser will conduct research, write reports and facilitate business between UK and Austrian companies through collaboration and consultation.

What will you be expected to achieve?

  • Maximise direct investment from Austria to the UK through active collaboration and consultation with Austrian companies on opportunities for new and increased investment business in the UK market.
  • Develop new and maintain existing business relationships (Business Development and Key Account Management) with Austrian companies to attract high value foreign direct investment, contributing to knowledgeintensive economic activity in the UK and numbers of jobs increased/retained.
  • Collaborate with Austrian companies to promote R&D in the UK and to partner with UK firms and university departments.
  • Raise profile and awareness of UK and the British Embassy's offer in Austria, developing and promoting the reputation of the UK as the international business partner of choice and as an attractive investment location, through organisation of seminars, workshops, inward and outward missions, participation at selected trade fairs and exhibitions as well as digital marketing channels.
  • Maintain and develop investment team data management incl. internal CRM, pipeline and campaign dashboards.
  • Support with briefings and information for high level visitors, events and meetings related to investment activities in Austria.
  • Contribute to and support with maintenance of the British Embassy's social media channels.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience of business development (including digital business development utilising databases) and key account management, ideally in an international context.
  • Great IT skills including capabilities in digital marketing, digital project management, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, CRM-Systems and databases.
  • Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are thought through carefully.
  • Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Formal qualifications in business/economics/finance/marketing combined with relevant work experience.
  • Excellent communication skills to work well with commercial clients, external contacts and a wide and diverse Europe team.
  • Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a full-time permanent contract (35 hours per week - working from home is possible after an induction period (approx. 60% office / 40% working from home). Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked.

The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance.
